Leeds battled hard in the first leg at Rome's Olympic stadium to come away defeated by the only goal of the game, a 17th minute strike by Roma's Marco Delvecchio , and were unlucky not to earn at least a draw after hitting the post twice. Their performance was made all the more impressive considering the club's recent managerial difficulties, a Uefa touchline ban for caretaker-boss David O'Leary and the second-half sending off of midfielder Bruno Ribeiro.
